How to find Used Campers

Buying used campers at auction can be one of the best ways to get a good deal on a great motorhome but you do have to be careful. In this article I will outline some of the main points you should take into consideration when buying in an auction.

Buying a motorhome in an auction is not for the faint hearted. You need to know exactly the type of vehicle you are looking for and you need to be able to put an accurate price on a vehicle in a short time. As you may know, the 'Blue Book' or 'Nada' prices for motorhomes are not all that accurate. It is difficult to value a motorhome as they have the vehicle side of things and the living side as well. The fittings and fixtures, the living space and the overall condition of these affects the price greatly and the book prices seem to go on vehicle age and mechanical condition only.

The best way to find out the price of a vehicle is to see how much other vehicles of similar specifications and conditions with similar fittings are selling for by checking the local press and the specialized RV magazines. After a while of doing this you will find it easy to work out a price for yourself based on what fixtures and fittings are included and the condition of the living space along with the mechanical condition of the vehicle.

Before you start bidding on a vehicle you need to know what its value would be if you were to buy it from a private buyer. When the bidding starts the opening bids will be much lower that what it is worth and in many cases there will be very few or no serious bidders and you will be able to win the bidding securing an extremely low price. At times however you will be confronted with inexperienced bidders who will push up the price. In these cases it is very easy for the price to go up to and over its actual value. This is why you need to work out before hand what the approximate value of the vehicle would be in a private deal or you will end up paying over the odds for your vehicle.

When working out your vehicle value you should bear in mind that there will be auction fees and commissions to pay on top of the final bid price. Check these out before hand but you can be pretty safe in putting 10% on top of the price. Also you should include the cost of any repairs that you will have to undertake (every used motorhome will need something doing to it).

For a list of police auctions and seized auctions near to you you should take a look at the Seized Vehicle Auctions web site or the Auction Pass site. Here you can find vehicles with bid prices starting as low as $100.
